Recommend a nice restaurant for ladies x-mas celebration

We want to dress up and not look out of place, we don't want to spend at the very highest price points but are willing to spend moderately, we want to go today so probably won't get reservations (though we can go early), would prefer Capitol Hill/midtown/downtown but will venture into upper NW if necessary.

Any ideas for us?

When you say "dress up" are you refering to being decked out trendy? Or looking to get away with cocktail attire at a restaurant? It's the difference between suggesting a trendy hot spot vs. an old school classic.

I don't think we are necessarily looking to dress trendy (though I am middle-aged, so I'm not even sure what that means), but we want to be able to wear little black dress, high heels, etc. We just don't want to feel out of place looking fancy.

Would Cafe Atlantico be a good match?

What about Cubra Libre in the Penn Quarter?

this is too late for you, but for future reference, my girlfriends and I had a nice dinner at Sonoma on Capitol Hill a couple years ago. (We've also eaten at its sister restaurant Mendocino Grille and liked that just as much.) I also really enjoyed Cafe Atlantico - both the food and the service. And if it's not too pricey, I think Oya is a really fun girly place. Very pretty decor, good food, nice waiters. You could dress up for Poste too, or Proof.
