Just curious ? I have always heard about people's water breaking but why does this really happen ? and is this the #1 cause for early labor ? |
I know vitamin C deficiency can dramatically add to the risk of premature rupture. I don't know about the primary cause for premature labor. |
My water did not break for any of my pregnancies until I was in hard, active labor. |
I read that lifting weights can cause your water to break early.
I am sure there are other factors that go into this as well. |
This is not a particularly helpful response, I am sure, but sometimes "nothing" can cause a person's water to break. My water broke in the middle of the night several weeks before my due date....I asked the doc what caused it and she very much gave me the "sometimes this just happens" response.

i've heard if you are riding on something bumpy (i.e. car driving over unpaved roads with pot holes), the water can break. |
Mine broke while I was moving clothes from the washer to the dryer one evening, son was born the next day (only 2 days before his due date, not early). A friend's broke after she was coughing very hard--again, not a premature labor. As the PPs have said, sometimes it just happens, but mostly it doesn't, according to all the books--often the doctor will break it after you're in labor. |
Mine broke with a leak not a gush at 36 weeks. Luckily, baby was born a healthy 6.5 lbs about 30 hours later and all was well. |
PP here - Dr said they could not determine a cause for my water breaking so early. |
I only know one person whose water broke before going to the hospital and she was doing yoga at the time, could be purely coincidental though, and it was only 2 weeks before her due date. |
I was working on a jigsaw puzzle a few days before my due date...and my water broke. |
seriously - lifting weights? the only response of all of these that has any scientific basis is the one regarding vitamin C - makes sense since vitamin C strengthens the connections in between our cells.
i am taking vitamin C supplements in addition to my prenatals these last two months before EDD. |
If your doctor sweeps your membranes, they could accidentally break your water. |
Mine broke with a gush in the middle of the night, 2 days after my due date. No cause for it...it was just time and that's how my body started the labor. |
