Spoiled Onions ?

Anonymous
How do you know when onions have gone bad? I mean other than the obvious signs of mold or rot. If you do not refridgerate your onions and when you cut into them, they give off a white milky liquid, does this mean they are no good? If potatoes have sprouted and you cut off the sprouts, can you still use them or should you throw them away? Already tried google and didn't get any conclusive answers. Anybody?

You can probably still use the potatoes but I think they get more starchy as they age. Not sure about the onions though.

Onions keep a good long time in cool storage, but as they age I don't like the taste as much.

I wouldn't use an onion that gave off a milky liquid -- I don't know that it is dangerous, but again, I woudln't think the taste would be that great.
