Preschool and Daycare Discussion
|
I am looking for recommendations for my 15 month old daughter. I am flexible as to where the daycare/nanny as I live in NE DC but work in Georgetown. If anyone can make any recommendations I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks |
| You can contact Locate Childcare. A search service for Maryland. Google them. |
| Try Mrs. Bradshaw. She lives on Kansas Ave in Takoma NE-right across from Hope Community PCS. (I live in the neighborhood and used her for both of my children.) 202.829.2726. |
| St Ann's on the DC/Hyattsville line : www.stanns.org |
| Join the Brookland Kids listserve on Yahoo and pose your question there. You'd probably get more responses and recommendations. |

La Petite on Michigan and First - I know several people who have used it (or currently use it) and are happy
Greenwood School in Hyattsville (ditto above comment) |
| FYI Greenwood has a really long wait list. And also has priority for the federal agencies across the street. |

We are in Hyattsville and work in NW DC. We have our toddler at Heritage Childcare in Hyattsville. We really love it, his class is small and the teachers are attentive, and the director is always available no matter what you need. It's really affordable, although they just did raise rates in January (they are still less than most). Our little one is very happy & so are we.

I took my DC out of the infant room at Heritage due to pretty serious reasons:
*caregivers fed DC 2 ounces of milk in a 9-hour day with a 5.5 hour span in feedings. *caregivers openly spoke negatively about other parents *caregivers were very hostile when therapists from the county Infant and Toddlers Program wanted to conduct PT session at the center (this is routine practice). they were notified in person and by fax of the visit. the county offered to find me emergency care after witnessing the event. I do believe the toddler rooms are more better but I would stay away from the center until there is a significant change in staff and management. |

PP here: Before the visit took place, I asked the special needs board to see how a center should react:

PP I'm sorry this happened to you. Our child is not in the infant room. I also don't have experience with physical therapists at daycares, so I really can't comment on that aspect. Can I ask where you ended up going?
On the other hand, the children in my child's class are pretty happy and always give me hugs, and my little one hugs when we arrive/leave. I call to check on my child at random times. Some days I get there early and check to see what is going on. Every time there is appropriate staff/child ratio, the kids are attended to and happy. |
| PP again, I also have to say that I checked out the Maryland license reviews of St. Ann's and Greenwood and St. Jerome's (all popular in Hyattsville) before going to Heritage. Each one had violations- some I thought were pretty disgusting like sanitary conditions and food preparations (I can't remember each, but it's public info and you can check yourself). Heritage didn't have any violations in this regard. I'm not sure, but is there any way to check out about a daycare for the special needs issues in regards to licensure, etc? |
|
To the PP. Yes, I did check out some of the local centers online and I have to agree with you on the information that I found about the local centers.
My DD was premature but should not have long-term delays from her early arrival so there was no real special care that she needed--just to be fed! She is currently in a center in DC. |
| we took DC out of Greenwood for a number of issues as well. Don't know why everyone thinks it's so great. . . |
| PP here again- we were briefly in the infant room, and moved to the 1yr old room- our child is much happier in there. I think I remember your daughter. We had a hard time finding a center in DC that wasn't insanely expensive or with a waitlist we could actually get off of. Do you have any recommendations? |
