Tell me about Tuckahoe Elementary School

Anonymous
Hi- I'm considering pulling my DD from Montessori and enrolling her into Tuckahoe next year (her kinder. year). Please share any feedback about Tuckahoe. I'd also love some info. about the after school care...

Thanks!

I can tell you parents are snatching up homes in the tuCkahoe district so the can send their kids to Tuckahoe. You cannot go wrong sending your child to Tuckahoe or any APS school for that matter. There is a kinDergarten open house coming up. You should go and ask questions.

After school care is extended day. All you have to do is get your application inon time and you can get in. Kids have a great time playing inside and out.

I would check on the size - I know Tuckahoe had some issues with overcrowding and I think they shifted some students to other schools. HEre is a link to the class sizes for this year:

That said, overcrowding is pretty much an issue for all N. Arlington schools these days.

My kids go to Tuckahoe. It's a great school, but it's very overcrowded (around 620 kids when built for 499). It's projected to get 100 more kids in the next few years. It already has 6 trailers, and doesn't have room on the property for more (unless we wanted to lose our entire playground). Other schools are becoming overcrowded, but none have reached the level of Tuckahoe. It's nice that it's popular, but there's a downside!

Hello, I'm wondering if any current or recent past Tuckahoe parents would be willing to tell me the pros and cons of the school (particularly K). We are considering a private (accepted) and trying for the ATS lottery and would appreciate any additional information. TIA.

You're a lemming if you buy into the party line that you can't go wrong with APS.

APS is one of the best school systems in the state, pp. What's the source of your nastiness? Are you stuck in Alexandria City Public Schools or something?

Four-year dropout rate at Wakefield averages between 15 and 25%. 'Nuff said.

Ok, but I think that is (perhaps significantly) lower than the national average. And Tuckahoe is not in that pyramid, so selfishly I am not terribly concerned about that now.

Any feedback on Tuckahoe? Thanks

Tuckahoe has great teachers and a great parent community. However, Tuckahoe will be getting 4 additional trailers on its blacktop playground next year, for a total of 10 trailers on the property. Tuckahoe is the most overcrowded school in Arlington, and will be over 140% capacity in 3 years. You need to decide if you want to send your child to a severely overcrowded school.

The trailers don't bother me so much. Most are nicer than the classrooms. But how does this kind of crowding work with things like lunch times and gym?

I have neighbors whose kids go there, generally hear good things. They also say it's crowded, but have pretty much liked all their teachers. They've said good things about the new assistant principal.
