Kids Adventures?

Anonymous
Hello. I am going to be returning to work full time in January. I have a kindergarten age daughter (six) and am considering after/before care with Kids Adventures (Carderock Springs School). This is all new to me.

Does anyone have much experience with Kids Adventures? I am not planning on leaving her each morning..more like one hour before school starts twice a week and perhaps one half hour to 45 minutes after school 3-4 days per week.

Today she told me "I don't want to go to aftercare" but I don't think she really knows what it is all about.

I peeked in one and it seemed to be alot of older boys (3,4,5 grades) and not many little girls.

Anyone have experience with them and can you advise?

Thanks!!

I don't have experience with your school..but I would peak again. Aftercare tends to be more heavily the younger kids. 5th graders are more likely to be home alone. Maybe you just happened on a small chunk of the population. My kids like aftercare (BAR-T) in the earlier years and less now.

I think you should talk to parents at your school whose kids attend the aftercare program. Even if "Kids Adventures" has a good/bad reputation overall - it's the people working at your school that your child will spend time with.

Maybe you can ask if you can stay and observe one day after school??

Express your concern to the principal or front office and see what they recommend.

I was not impressed with Kids Adventures either. I would definitely not put my kids in that program. I was concerned about the staffing/supervision and the general "feel" of the program. The staff looked mostly like young men in their early 20's (maybe this explains the number of older boys you noticed in the program). I didn't appreciate the rough way that the staff spoke to the kids (and the way the staff seemed "checked-out" while interacting with the kids). I have observed other "after-school care" programs which seem nurturing and fun. This seemed more like a choice of last-resort to me.

Thank you.

I am also trying to find out about Kids Adventures at Carderock. My son will be starting there Fall 2011. You mentioned other after-school care programs that were more nurturing and fun -- were these ones that are open to Carderock kids? Were you referring to Kenwood Park Children's Center?
