Can illegal kids go to public school? |
It's not possible to be an illegal kid. There is no such thing.
It is possible, however, to be a child who is an undocumented immigrant. The children of undocumented immigrants have a constitutional right to attend public school. (See Plyler v. Doe, 1982.) In any case, most children of illegal immigrants are actually American citizens themselves. |
Yes. |
Correction: Children WHO ARE undocumented immigrants have a constitutional right to attend public school. (So do children who are citizens but have undocumented parents, of course.) |
The PPs are right. All children have a right to attend public school, documented or not.
And illegal kid? Come on, OP. |
ESOL teacher here in a public high school. I know we have some students who came here illegally (often after their parents were already here), but we are not allowed to ask and they are all allowed to get an education. |
Thank you for pointing this out to OP. |
Give OP a break. You obviously knew what she meant, otherwise you couldn't or wouldn't provide an answer. I'm sure s/he meant no harm, as I'm sure you all mean no harm when you say or write things that are politically incorrect. And, you know you do! |
No. I'm really old of people hiding behind the stupid and phony "oh everyone has to be so politically correct these days." I am not concerned with political correctness. I am, however, greatly concerned with the effects of dehumanizing people, particularly children. This goes way beyond words. It's this kind of attitude that contributed to the Holocaust, slavery, and genocide throughout the world. So no, I won't "give OP a break." It's too important. |
I wasn't suggesting that we dispense with what is politically (and humanly) correct. Trust me, my roots scream slavery. And day in and day out, I have all sorts of people asking questions and making statements that are totally not cool or correct. Part of it is ignorance. Part of it is lack of exposure. I grew up in the south where I thought nothing of saying things like "jew 'em down". Because guess what, I didn't even know what/who a Jew was. Never met one. Never heard of one. Just used the expression that I'd heard a million times...until I moved here and was corrected by my boyfriend (at the time). I was beside myself when I learned what I had been saying all those years! However, regarding OP, I wouldn't doubt if the question were posed by someone or a relative of someone who is an undocumented immigrant. |
Good point. |
I couldn't agree more. I cringed at the use of "illegals" just in the subject line because of the issue of dehumanization that you mention. |
how so? |
If they were born here, they are American citizens, regardless of their parents' legal status. |
i know that. but "most"? i'm not so sure. |
