Infertility Support and Discussion
|
I have just started TTC and have a medical condition that will make this a very long and drawn out process, probably necessitating IVF, unless something miraculous happens.. but I am keeping my fingers crossed! In any event, I am wondering how much to alter my current lifestyle now that we are TTC. I am not a big drinker anyway and know that alcohol will not affect the fetus yet before a BFP (something about sharing blood, right? I can't remember but this is what my doctor told me). In any event, I am not at the bar taking shots, haha, so don't think a glass of wine with dinner here or there before BFP would be a huge issue.
I do take ritalin each day for ADD and it helps my productivity IMMENSELY. I will gladly give it up post BFP, for obvious reasons but am wondering what to do now. We plan to at least try naturally for 6 mos, maybe longer, before making sure that we have to spend the money on IVF. Before I go off ritalin 6+ months for no reason, I want to make sure I actually need to. Obviously I will bring this up wiht my dr but wanted to see what you all thought. Do you think the fetus could be affected by ritalin if I took it before BFP? I saw studies regarding rats on the internet that were scary, but I don't know if the timing during first trimester matters the way it does with alcohol - like how it wouldn't hurt to drink before BFP but obviously you would not continue or you could wind up with a child with Fetal ALcohol Syndrome.. Anyway sorry for the drawn out post but I would appreciate any input. I don't want to be overly cautious and hurt myself at work in the meantime (no ritalin) but I absolutely do not want to expose my future child to something dangerous. |

I was taking Ritalin when I (unexpectedly!) got pregnant with my first. I was probably 6 or 7 weeks pregnant before I even realized it.
I was on Vyvanse when I got pregnant with second and third. |
| My ob/gyn and RE cleared me to take my ADD medicine (concerta) until I got a bfp. |

I went off adderall when my fertility specialist suggested it might be getting in the way of my becoming pregnant. I'm not sure how established that is -- she seemed to ring alarm bells about a number of subjects that turned out to be unwarrented.
That said, if it's going to take a long time to conceive = a long time without meds when you probably need them more than ever. The psychiatrist I was seeing suggested I go off Adderal once I determined I was pregnant. |
