I want a pair of flat-soled riding-type boots to wear with leggings. There are so many out there--round toe, pointy toe, buckle, zipper, chunky, sleek--I am totally overwhelmed. Anyone have any guidance? Or better yet, anyone out there who has a good eye for what's in and can find me a decent pair to order online?
Criteria: --black --not super-narrow calf --comfortable enough for everyday wear --casual but not too chunky --appropriate for a 34-year-old who used to be fashionable but lost it somewhere along the line and is looking to get rid of her damn Danskos --preferably in the $200-250 range but I am willing to go up to $350 for something fabulous that I can wear for years Thanks for any help!!! |

| try Cole Haan. I can't find mine online (Air Merit Tall), but they are super comfortable. Love the Nike insole. |

I think you might need to go to an actual store to figure out what works for you. With boots, you want the shaft to fit closely to your calf (but not too closely). I have returned many boots online for that reason. Each pair fits a little differently.
Lord and Taylor has a great selection of boots at Tysons - I would go there first! |

How about these?
http://www.lordandtaylor.com/eng/Shoes-Boots-tall-JACINDA_BOOT-lordandtaylor/151844 I would get something simple - lots of boots out there are over-the-calf, or have lots of buckles and zippers. Ones that are more plain are classic and wearable for many seasons. |

Are these too chunky? I have them and like them a lot.

PP here. Love these:
http://www.jcrew.com/womens_category/shoes/boots/PRDOVR~31126/31126.jsp I have a similar pair in the extended calf (big calves here) and really like them. They have aged nicely, too. Might consider the gray--very pretty, a little different, and will work with pretty much everything black would.... |
| Do you want a zipper? I used to have "real" riding boots without a zipper, when I had a horse, and they were a real pain to get on and off. |
too cowboy-ey |
| I got a great pair of La Canadienne boots at Lord and Taylor that fit what you describe - they are tall, black, chunky low-ish heel and very comfortable. I love this brand bc they are stylish but work well if it's wet so i don't have to worry when i go out in them in yucky weather. I love wearing the boots with leggings. |

have these too. love la canadienne. the riding boot style has a tiny elastic dart at the top of the cuff so you always have the right fit on your calf. |

I bought these in brown when I was pregnant and I looooooove them. They have an adjustable strap on the calves.

| if you have unusually sized calves (narrow or wide) i would recommend actually pulling out the measuring tape and figuring out exactly what circumference works best for you. this is the only way i've been able to find tall boots that fit me appropriately. on zappos and some other sites, they list the exact shaft height and circumference so if you have done your measurements then you should know exactly how they're going to fit around your leg. |
