question about which passport to use for dual citizenship question

Anonymous
Hi,

I am travelling to France this week (I am French). I recently became a US citizen. Can I use my French passport to enter Europe and my US pasport to come back to the States or do I have to use the same (US) one?
TIA

Yes, you can use each country's to enter each country. In fact if you have a US passport you have to use it to enter the US.

Yes. My British/Amer husband does this all the time--it saves a lot of time!

Yes. Please, please make sure that you use your US passport for re-entry in the U.S. They almost didn't let me back in on my Scandinavian passport a couple of years ago. My thinking was, why tote (and risk losing) two passports, and since we were visting multiple countries, I thought an EU passport would be best. Then I had to plead my way back into the country.

ok. Thanks for the responses. I thought that if i used my US passport for re-entry, it'd have to show the stamps from getting into France so that they know where I've been.... I have had issues with immigration officers many times and they can be a bit anal with that stuff (excuse the word)....

I'm also US/France dual and have done both - sometimes used my US passport, sometimes my French one to enter France. You definitely need to use the US one to re-enter the US, though.

My dual-citizen husband also does this all the time and he would need a visa for his home country if he were only a U.S. citizen. The U.S. folks never check his passport for this for some reason. I guess only the home country cares. ?

DD has dual citizenship, so we use her Euro passport when we take her there and the US passport when we return. It makes the process so much smoother.
