When do we need to register for SACC?

Anonymous
We are planning to buy a house in the Woodson pyramid in the next year or year and a half, with DD entering kindergarten in the 2012-13 school. I hear that the SACC lists fill up quickly, and I'm nervous because I don't think we will know exactly which ES district we will be in until early 2012 - will that be too late? When is the earliest to register for SACC and when is the earliest I should register to ensure that DD will get a slot? Thanks!

Earliest day to register is July 1 the year before, so July 1, 2011. Why not just do it then?

We registered as soon as we put the offer on the house so we knew what the address and our ES would be.

I agree with the previous poster, right away if you absolutely know and at each of the schools DC might attend. Being completely mercenary , that's how to play the game to your own advantage. Just remember to cancel the other schools once you know which ES you're in.

Btw, you can be on the wait list for two schools. If either of those schools are remotely in demand, better call July 2011. Some schools are so bad, you'll be waiting for years. Others aren't such an issue.

We were on the waiting list for 2 years before getting in, so I would say the sooner the better. They will also tell you how many people in front of you.

wait, so I have twins who are not yet 2. Should I already be on a waiting list for when they go to Kindergarten?

You can't get on the list until the summer one year prior.

But when I called right when they opened on the first available day to sign up for our ES I was already around #45. I don't understand this. She said something about others being on the list from last year, so I guess even if you call the minute you can you may still not get in.

If people don't get in what other options have you found? We only live a few blocks from the school, but obviously K is too young to walk home alone. Also, are most ES in Fairfax still doing 1/2 day Monday (makes it awesomely easy for 2 f/t working parents!).

All ES in Fairfax are half-day Monday. Yes, it sucks if you work. Check into local daycares and karate places. Many have before/aftercare programs.

But SACC would cover this time, right?

Yes, after-school SACC covers early release Mondays for ES.

Don't worry about that. You will get in by September. I was 65 on the waitlist when I called, and we were good to go in September. I really don't think you have anything to worry about.

the elementary schools near us all seem to have after-school bus arrangements with local daycare centers, too. Probably slightly more than SACC, but also an option. The base school for my daughter is a half-day kindergarten (sucko) but is directly accross from a kindercare, so most parents wind up sending their kids there if they don't get into sacc.

Ugh, my school is 1/2 day, is NOT across from a kindercare, and my child is #106 on the waitlist. I was told that was a multi-year wait. I'm thinking of sending him to private/catholic kindergarten because otherwise he will be on the bus all day traveling to and from before and after care at private places. He's on the list for other schools, but this just sux. I signed up in the summer, too.

How can the county guarantee a spot for kindergarten but not for SACC? I'll pay for it, I just don't want my kid to be on the bus all day long.
