How do you even tip a garbage guy?

Our mailman has misdelivered our mail countless times over this year (getting our next door neighbor's mail, or that from our neighbor who has the same numerical address on a parallel street, or vise versa!). Grinch or not, nothing for him. He'd probably lose the envelope anyway . . .

Someone told me that the garbage guys love a case of beer on top of the garbage can.

Never thought of tipping the garbage men. Always tip the mailman and the newspaper delivery people..

Case of beer for the garbage pickup crew and cookies for the mail person. Though it is a funny custom because I think they are relatively quite well paid and have a lot of job security. Ok, maybe scratch the last one seeing how the economy is still rocky and the government is in debt.

Where did this custom of tipping the mailman start? WTF I am not tipping mine

LOL. I agree.

My DH just pointed out that leaving a case of beer for a group driving a truck might be a bad idea...I'm sure the thought is they would drink later, but what if they didn't....

Maybe donuts are a better gesture?

I think the garbage workers are used to receiving beer as holiday gifts and know better than to drink on the job. They could lose their very nice job. I'd be more worried about someone else driving by collecting free beer!

It is past 9:30 a.m. and I am still waiting for delivery of my WaPo. I've already called in for "redelivery." I'm tempted to put a penny in the envelope they left me last week and hand it to them when they finally show up. IF they show up.

Even if only 10 people on their route put out a case of beer, where exactly do you think they are going to store it before they get back to the facility?

I think we should start a new custom where we leave canned goods for the garbage and mail guys to pick up during the holidays so they can take it to the food bank. I think the post office already has a separate can food drive but maybe they could supplement with this.

I love tipping. If you don't enjoy it then yes, I think you are a Grinch. I can't afford to tip this year. : (

For the person who said she/he gives cookies to the mail person, do you leave them on your front steps with a note? (Funny - it just hit me that you may have a mailbox in which you leave the cookies. We have a mail slot in our front door, so while I like the idea of leaving our mail carrier cookies, I'm not sure where to leave them.)

Cookie poster here. I hand it to the carrier when she comes by. You could leave a box in front of your door with the cookies and note on top.
