Fairfax County Elementary School Transfer Question

Anonymous
According to the web: 1. Students must be enrolled in their base school before starting the application procedure.

The FAQ states that you must be a resident of Fairfax County.

If your child is in private school in Fairfax County but seeks to transfer from the base school, must the student leave private school and attend the base school for a year before he can apply for a transfer in Jan?

Thanks!

No replies to this yet, but I'm also interested to know. Can anyone help out the OP and me?

I suggest contacting the principal at the base school and ask him/her. Placement is subject to the approval of both the base school principal as well as the receiving school principal anyway, so it makes sense to start the process that way.

step 1: verify that the school is open to transfers

http://www.fcps.edu/fts/dashboard/10-11dashboard.html

The school you wish to transfer to might be at or above capacity. These schools will not accept transfers.

step 2: verify that you have a reason for the transfer that meets FCPS criteria.

http://www.fcps.edu/dss/osp/StudentRegistration/student-transfer/

They won't accept transfers just becuase you want to attend a different school or a different school has a program you'd prefer.

If the school is open, and you meet one of the transfer criteria, you submit an application by the deadline and hope for principal approval.

My friends got their child transferred so that she could be in the German immersion program at another fairfax county school. Language immersions are one reason they allow transfers, but as the PP said, the school can't be over-enrolled or they won't allow you to transfer. She never actually attended public school at her base school - she went to private kindergarten (she missed the age-5 cutoff by a couple weeks) and started 1st grade at the transfer school.

Even in-boundary admission is done by lottery.
