Timing of IUI

Anonymous
I am wondering what is the best time to do an IUI after the LH surge.
I know IUI's are typically scheduled 36 hours after the surge. But a woman can ovulate as soon as 12 hours after the surge. In that case, the egg is viable for about 8 hours, or up to hour 20 or so, right? So wouldn't the party be over by the time of an IUI at 36 hours? Also, an IUI at 36 hours after the surge would be too early if the woman ovulates at 48 hours after the surge, right? Although, hopefully, in that case, some sperm would still be around. Am I not understanding all of this correctly? It seems IUI timing is a bit hit-or-miss, no pun intended. Is there anyway to better pinpoint the IUI to actual ovulation? Has anyone actually had a "monitored" IUI, where u/s is used to better pinpoint ovulation?

I thought if you hare doing an IUI, you get bloodwork and ultrasound done every day after day 6 to monitor your ovulation. And I agree - you need to do an IUI within 24-36 hours of your LH surge, but the ultrasound will be able to tell you the exact timing of the IUI.
