Neighbor Gifts - Food

Anonymous
I usually give five or six neighbor families a tin of homemade Christmas cookies, but this year I'm just not feeling the Christmas cookie love, LOL, and I may limit my baking to a few things for my family.

I'm wondering if instead I could make cinnamon rolls, say in sets of 8 rolls in disposable, covered aluminum pans. They could be re-heated for breakfast (I'd make and deliver them on Christmas Eve).

Would you like to receive this gift?

Food gifts to and from neighbors are just almost always a good thing. I like giving or receiving any gift, really. Except maybe a flaming bag of poo on the porch. That would be bad.

Last year I gave away bags of pralines and cinnamon sugar almonds, they were a big hit and easier than cookies. I plan to do it again this year.

I would love cinnamon rolls!

I give away cookie dough. I make the kind that you can freeze and slice. I roll it into logs, wrap in wax paper and tie the ends together, along with instructions. That way, they can have fresh, warm cookies whenever they want.

I say do whatever is easiest for you. While I fully appreciate the thoughtfulness of food gifts, and often drool at the thouht of them - I admit, they often don't actually get eaten in my house. The holidays just brings so much junk food our way, that a lot of it goes to waste. And everyone in my office is so sick of junk at their house, that they get mad if you bring it in to work. So, I would hate to think that someone made themselves miserable with baking.

Loving the frozen cookie dough idea. And actually like the cinabon roll idea too - as we have overnight guests, so it would be great to have a special treat in the morning.

Thanks all; this is very helpful.

I love the cookie dough idea - had never thought of that, but it would make a great present as it could be frozen and used long after the overindulging of the holidays is gone.

Cookie Dough PP - do you make chocolate chip cookie dough?

Cookie dough PP here. I bet you could make chocolate chip. I made some oatmeal spice ones that I got out of a magazine a few years ago (Real Simple, maybe). It was their idea to do the frozen dough as a gift. I shouldn't take credit...

we did cupcakes this year for our neighbors -- my kid had a BALL making them and decorating them and then we hand delivered them and she loved every minute

A neighbor of ours has always done "Indoor S'Mores" and included a little tin filled with homemade graham crackers (with a layer of chocolate on them), homemade marshmallows and instructions on heating. I will admit they never made it to the heating part in our house. These neighbors moved a few months ago and I am SOOOO hoping they'll come back and deliver these anyway!! They are so good they make you want to cry.

this is the recipe you need if you're making cinnamon rolls in quantity...i've been dying to try it, gets rave reviews all over the internet.

this year i'm giving candied walnuts and balsamic vinaigrette. thinking it might be good to give something that doesn't have to be eaten right away. here are recipes if you are so inclined (both really easy).

btw the two together make a fantastic salad with feta cheese, dried cranberries and of course greens (i generally use romaine, as it holds up well for a party - buy it would be great with more delicate greens if you are having a plated salad).
