Tell me about Kensington Parkwood elementary

Anonymous
We'll be moving to Kensington and will be zoned for Kensington Parkwood. Anyone with kids who are there currently? What do you like/not like. Is it overcrowded? Any information about the school/neighborhood would be greatly appreciated!

Nice school and community. We love it, but it is at/over capacity.

This is our third year at KP, and we love it and the Parkwood neighborhood. Fabulous leadership, motivated teachers, involved parents. Our kids are very happy there. This year there are portables for the first time, so we've joined the ranks of overcrowded Montgomery County schools, but the administration seems to be dealing with the growth pretty effectively.

What classes are in the portables? It's amazing that the school was just rebuilt and it's so overcrowded.

The fourth graders are--they said at a PTA meeting that the 4th grade team chose (requested?) to go to the portables.

Our understanding is that members of the community worked hard and got the county to make the school the maximum size from the start. Obviously, this wasn't enough, but the county only forecasts based on children already living in the neighborhood. They don't take into account potential future demographic changes (e.g. a neighborhood where homes owned by elderly residents are likely to be turned over to young families, like we were, who are looking for a strong school).

First year at KP, and as pp's shared, LOVE the community feel--most kids walk to school or are driven by neighborhood parents, tons of parent involvement, an 'open door' feel, responsive teachers/staff/principal. I see why 4th grade teachers supported going into portables. They are almost like a little 'community' in themselves. The portables appear very clean/neat and doesn't overshadow the school like some in other schools. Otherwise, new, clean, building.

Our only complaints: there is a bit of bullying--though the counselor regularly meets with all grades to discuss, and yes, the class sizes average about 26. But it is MCPS!

18:54 here. Our kids haven't run into any bullying themselves, but the counselor (who is fantastic!) is discussing it a lot with the kids, so how to deal with bullying has become a topic of discussion at home. The PTA also asked the counselor to talk about it at the last PTA meeting. I know that the administration takes this sort of thing very seriously, too.

Not to hijack this post, but my DC will be starting at KP in the fall. Any advice on how to prepare for it? Is there a way to get information on what goes on there, get involved within the community now? Do you recommend a visit to the school?

Make sure you find out about the kindergarten orientation this spring. Your child will get to meet some other kids and teachers, and you can chat with parents.

You might be able to join the email group now (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/kp-eaglenet/).

Most years, a parent will organize get-togethers at the playground over the summer, which is a fun way for kids to meet each other.
