MCPS to Lose its School Resource (Police) Officers

Anonymous
Is this a real issue or just a political one? They got cut back from 25 or so down to 9 and now they are getting rid of the 9 in budget cuts. Does anyone see a difference in their kids' school safety? (My child won't be in high school until next year, so it's not an issue....yet).

They are also talking about raising teachers' benefits costs substantially (while continuing not to give them raises). In other words, a substantial pay cut after years of no increases in pay.

If something's gotta give, I'd happily give up the police officers before cutting teachers' benefits.

From what I've heard - in the high schools that have seen the cuts - there is an uptick in unsavory activity in the times that the officer is not present. The miscreants are smart enough to figure out the schedule of the safety officers, and, so, wait until he is no longer present. That took some time to figure out though, so the beginning of the year didn't have much change. As they've figured it out, there has been anecdotal evidence of an uptick in incidents.

Makes you wonder why you voted for the same County Council and School Board hmmmm

No worries. The head security guy bought $20 million worth of extra intense security cameras for all the schools. Didn't even get the Board of Education to vote on them. He said they would cut down on need for security.

Ike Leggett cut the Police Officers completely. The Council put 9 back. The School Board is its own piece of work.

The Council kept them against Leggett's recommended cuts. Just FYI.
