Charlie or Charley?

We're naming our baby Charles. I expect we'll use a nickname, but how do we spell it? Is Charley a more feminine version?

Charlie.

Charley will remind everyone of Steinbeck's poodle.

The name Charley is a baby girl name. The name Charley comes from the French origin. In French The meaning of the name Charley is: Diminutive of Charlotte: A feminine form of Charles, meaning man or manly. Alternate meaning, tiny and feminine.

Our DS is named Charles after both of DH's grandfathers, one of whom went by Charlie and one of whom went by Charley. We decided to use Charlie because that's how people will spell it anyway and we didn't want to have him constantly having to correct it. But I think either is fine for a boy. I know 2 girls name Charlie and 2 girls named Charli, but I've never met a girl named Charley.

Seriously, do you want your son to go through his whole life saying, "no it's Charley with a y??" DH is a Jon and that's 10000x more common than Charley yet he gets his name misspelled all the time.

Charley is a girl's name. Charlie is the male version.
