Desperately seeking representation for equitable distribution/support trial and impending divorce.

Anonymous
I had found previous representation through my EAP ("cheap" and not worth it - he didn't put in any effort since I wasn't making any money for him) and according to him, because my husband never physically abused us, his adultery, his use of prostitutes and his verbal/mental abuse didn't come into play. I let him go, but apparently there are more divorce lawyers like that than there are who will stand up against this. I have been without consultation through my custody agreement and signed a 50/50 against my better judgement and now am heading into the distribution trial solo as well.

Please, does anyone know how to draft - or is willing to take a look at - the agreement and/or represent me? The trial is set for Dec. 15. VA law is very good ol'boy and I'm getting the short end of the stick in every way. (He even kicked me out of the house last year after I found out about his indiscretions and the lawyers were okay with it.) He's changed the locks on the doors, I'm on both mortgages, what am I entitled to???

PLEASE HELP!

If you need low cost representation, call Northern Virginia Legal Services. Also, call the local bar association for the county where your divorce proceedings are in court and ask if they have a lawyer referral service. A LRS will put you in touch with a lawyer who will give you a half hour consultation for about $40-$50 which is a fraction of the regular consultation fee charged by most lawyers.

If you're a union member, the union plus program has a list of lawyers who will give a 30 minute free consultation.

I represented myself in something similar and it was the best thing for me because I knew the situation inside and out and could catch ever single inaccuracy (and prove it). It went much better than it would have had I been able to afford a lawyer. Good luck to you.
