Paying out of pocket-- tax refund next year?

Anonymous
I have read that any medical expenses over 7.5% of gross income can be deducted for income tax.
I paid $20K for the SG Shared Risk program this month. Can I claim that on my tax return, even though we might get the full amount back if we choose to stop in the future?
Did anyone who paid out of pocket get money back in taxes?

I don't know the answer to your first question, but we deducted over 30K in IF-related expenses last year (well, we deducted whatever was over the 7.5% threshhold) and got a nice tax refund - probably about 10K between federal and state. (And our income was over 200K, which gave us a high threshhold to start with.) It was a lot of effort to pull together every receipt and count every expense (you can include transportation costs), but worth it.
