Is there a difference between these Duplo and Megabloks brands of building blocks for toddlers/preschoolers? Do you have a preference?
At what age did your kid start using the real Lego sets? |
| My kids used and loved megablocks when they were really little, up to about age 2.5. Then they moved on to duplo, which are basically for toddlers and young preschoolers. By preK (age 4), they moved on to what I think are regular Legos, as in the City Lego sets, which are marked ages 5+. I'm still not sure if the Legos in these City Lego sets are the same size as all of the other Lego sets, often marked for ages 7+. Would love to know this from parents of older children. |
| similar to PP - DD loved megablocks first (when she was around 15 months), then moved on to Duplo (when she was around 21 months), and hasn't yet hit Lego yet. The megablocks are bigger, then the Duplo, then the Lego, so in terms of fine motor skills, it makes sense that they would go in that order. |
| OP here. Thanks - I guess the main thing I was wondering was if Duplo and Megabloks are the same size, but 21:28, you said they are smaller. Thanks for the info! Anyone else have feedback on these toys? |
Duplo is made by Lego, I think. Megablocks and Duplo do not work together. I went with Duplo's for my DS b/c I thought they seemed nicer and had better kits, but recently in the Target I notices that Megablocks has some pretty nice kits too. I don't think there is much difference between the two from a age perspective. |
| We started Legos for DS around age 4, to help with his fine motor skills. Also, try the Trios. DS loves them and still plays with them, even though he has moved on to more advanced Legos, while the duplo blocks are gathering dust. Also my 2.5 y.o. likes the Trios better than the duplo blocks. Not sure if developmentally there is a difference... |

My 9 year old still uses his Duplos in conjunction with his smaller Legos -- he says they are good for building up the bottom of fortresses, etc. quickly.
So if you have a choice, I'd go with the Duplos until around age 5-7 and then start adding on Legos -- if you child enjoys building with Legos. I see boys still playing happily with them up till at lesat 4th grade. |
