where to buy rose bushes

Anonymous
I'm a novice gardener, and I would like to plant some rose bushes next spring. Could anyone recommend a place to buy rose bushes? I'm in North Bethesda. Thanks so much!

I researched which variety I wanted online then bought from Jackson & Perkins and from Brushwood nursery (I wanted only climbing roses). They have done very well.

Support your local nurseries! They'll have better variety and be familiar with our climate: In other words they can tell you what problems/diseases to look out for and which roses will work for you. I don't know if Heritage Rosarium is still in business. It was a gentleman who sold roses from his house, which he also opened for tours every Memorial Day weekend. Used to have a website but its been down awhile.

Then there's Hartwood Roses in Virginia. Connie is great and very knowledgeable. She's also running a $10 sale right now. http://www.hartwoodroses.com/index.php

I'd also suggest having a look around the rose forums on GardenWeb: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/rosesind/ along with the rose index at Help Me Find: http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/index.php

I would go to Behnke's. The one in Potomac is probably closest to you, but the one in Beltsville is larger (and easy off the Beltway). They really know what they're doing, a family-owned business for many years, and they guarantee their plants. If it doesn't do well for any reason, you can bring it back. (I only return things that I didn't kill through my own neglect or mismangagemen!)
