tips please - how not to pack on pounds during holidays?

Anonymous
I'm looking for tips for how people keep the pounds off during the holidays - little mental devices or other strategies?

If you tend to eat too much at cocktail parties, eat before you go so you are not tempted. If you eat too many treats at home, don't buy them. And, try to get out and exercise off the excess.

Portion control - don't deny yourself - but don't eat mounds of food - fill up on the less calorie foods - i.e. vegetables, protein and then have less (but still have some) of the carbs and the sweets.

Is this really a serious question? Eat less and exercise.

Yep - serious. I'm not asking about how to lose weight. The first two PPs got it right - you've been too hasty or just snarky 19:40.

Daily walks. High protein breakfast and no skipping lunches, to avoid reaching for the treats when hungry or low on energy.

One bite of everything. That's it. One alcoholic beverage. Look at the most gorgeous woman in the room and remind yourself that beauty takes discipline!

The most gorgeous woman in the room is usually stuffing her face because she knows how to take care of herself the other 364 days of the year.

If you can avoid it, don't do any baking so that you're not tempted to eat lots of high cal stuff at home.

I went to a brunch this weekend that I knew would have lots of tempting, bad food, so I just ate beforehand and declined to eat there, saying I had eaten early with the kids. I have a hard time resisting yummy treats at parties, so for me that was just easier.

I drink club soda with lime at holiday parties. Nobody can tell it is not alcoholic so I don't get any "loosen up it's the holidays" commentary. I go to a LOT of holiday parties in my industry. I also eat very light dinners at home -- like I will be eating homemade black bean soup and salad for dinner nearly every night in December. And this year I will be doing an extra 20 mins on the treadmill. Please note, I am already fairly overweight and have been working on that, to no avail, for a very long time.

I just make sure I'm true to the caloric bank account. I don't force myself to stick to one bite of everything -- what a miserable existence.

HOWEVER, if I feel as if I overspent calorically, I will make sure I make that up -- either in advance by eating much lighter during the day or afterwards for a day or two.

1. Spend holidays with my in-laws (who can't cook and have no decent snacks in the house and very little booze) and stay away from my parents (who are great cooks, have snacks I cannot resist and are serious about their cocktails, wine and after-dinner drinks). Might be miserable, but I won't gain weight. (JK - I will be spending one holiday with each, and I'll be cooking for the in-laws, so the food will be tasty and semi-healthful).

2. Lots of water. If you are well hydrated you are less likely to over-indulge in food or drink.

3. Up the exercise, if possible.

4. Small portions on the first go around. If still hungry, seconds on veggies, preferably ones that are not in cream sauces.

5. I like to have a veggie omelet for breakfast and a broth-based soup for lunch on work days. Fills me up without too many calories. Just watch the salt.

6. Wear your tightest jeans or pants at least once a week to keep yourself honest.

Food poisoning. I suspect it came from Friday's lunch at a restaurant while shopping. It's as if Thanksgiving dinner never happened. (though the puking has ended I am incredibly queasy still)

I've never seen this. The thin, fit women I know never stuff their faces. Ever. To them gluttony means having a sliver of pumpkin pie for dessert. Which is why they are thin and fit.
