| I was at Giant today (in VanNess) and I went down the soap/shampoo aisle to get some shower gel. A lady was there and proceeded to put 4 to 5 bottles of Dove shower gel into her purse and then walk off, all the time looking pretty much right at me. I really had no idea what to do, and in the end did nothing at all. Anybody seen something similar and had more balls than me? |
| I can understand being stunned at such boldness but why didn't you call the manager? |
| I saw a 20-something man put a huge steak into his jacket and he stared at me menacingly and said, "What you looking at?" I said nothing! This was in the Adams Morgan Safeway a few years ago. |

if it was food or hygienic products i wouldn't care.
fancy clothes/jewelry i'd call management. |
Same here. |
| Leave it alone-you don't know the person's situation. If you say I'm condoning crime,I'm not. If the person has a record they will be caught at some point as they have been in the past. If they don't have a record, again, you don't know anything about the situation that would compel a person to do such a thing. You'd be better off approaching the person, asking them about their situation and then offering some advice or help. But you don't want to get involved to that degree. Leave it alone and MYOB. |
Stealing is stealing no matter the item. I saw something similar and I just told one of the clerks what I had seen and she called the manager. Shoplifting is a crime and cost merchants millions of dollars every year. |

This story reminds me of a strange experience I had at the grocery store.
About a year and a half ago, I went grocery shopping at the Ballston Harris Teeter at about 8:00 or so at night. When I went to park, I noticed a young, incredibly thin, well dressed professional looking woman park her Zipcar in one of the spaces reserved for pregnant or new mothers/fathers. That was odd to begin with and I don't like conflict, so I just let it go... When I was in the store, I saw her walking around with a basket with opened food items in it. I then saw her open a bag of almonds (I was in the baking aisle- tells you what my weakness is) and she opened the bag of almonds and took out a few and then put it back on the shelf. I was completely weirded out and went to the customer service desk. In this case, I think she was mentally ill. It was just bizarre. |
whatever. I'd ask the person if they needed me to pay for it if you're so concerned about giants' losses. the person stealing a bottle of cheap shower gel must be in real need. being sent to jail won't help. |

OP's person took 4-5 bottles. I would guess someone in true need wouldn't keep looking at you and do it when no one was looking?? or is it the other way around? |
Who knows when they'll get another chance to grab stuff and run again w/o being noticed? |
| The fact that they were deliberately looking straight at me would piss me off enough to report them. |
Why? Then you are leaving it to the next guy who see her. And assuming that's another person who takes your advice, then she goes free again, and so on and so on. |
| When I had grand jury duty a few years ago, we refused to have a case move ahead against a woman who'd paid for groceries at Safeway with bad checks. No one wanted to punish her for feeding her children. She had four or five. They even had a representative come in from Safeway to convince us. They brought in and read aloud from whatever law book so that we could hear the law that she broke. We just didn't care. |
