The original plan was to leave at an insanely hour in the morning, but I am now considering packing everyone into the car at 8:00 and heading out. Usually take 495 to 270 to 70 to the PA Turnpike. I know there's some other way that goes through WV but I've never taken it.
Should we leave tonight or in the morning? Cast your vote! |
| *an insanely EARLY hour in the morning, I meant to say. |

here is the traffic camera link for WTOP.
http://www.wtop.com/?nid=370 check out the route you normally take - once you get up 270 you will be fine. |
| Thanks, PP! I've been checking out the reports, just wondering if anyone had any educated guesses from prior experience...not sure when the traffic will let up. |

HI there. I do that trip every other thanksgiving (but not this time, so I can't really say how it is). I don't think it's going to be that bad tomorrow. I think most of the traffic was this evening. Agree with other posters that it might be okay after 270 but I always feel like the merge onto 70 backs up hardcore when there is traffic. NOt much you can do about that because the alternative is 68, which you have to get on from 70 anyway. I find taking 68 doesn't really shave off much time and it's hell on your gas mileage because it's really mountainous. However, it's a stunning drive depending on the foliage. God's country and all!
Safe travels and say hi to Pgh for me. |
| Oops, just reread your post. In your shoes I'd wait until closer to 9 to leave. (Which if you're stilll reading, you'll be doing anyway). It'll take you about 4.5 hours if you don't hit too much traffic, depending on where in Pgh you're going. There is a drive thru starbucks in Breezewood as well as a starbucks at every Turnpike food court / rest area, in case things get really desperate. Do you have GPS? Sometimes those will tell you traffic. Or your smartphone's gps system? |
