What is a typical playgroup size? For a 2 year old?
For some reason I had it in my head that 5 kids would be typical, but the ones I've encountered are more like 10-12. These are playgroups that rotate through the moms' houses. Not only does this seem overwhelming to my daughter, this seems overwhelming to me! Does this mean I have social anxiety disorder? Am I denying my child by not joining? |
I guess it just depends. I'm in one and sometimes 3 moms show up and sometimes (but rarely 10 moms show up). I too live in a small house, but with a nice big yard, so I tend to hose when the weather is nice.
My daughter is not 2....she's 1, but her playgroup is for up to 10. It is overwhelming at first, but once everyone gets used to each other it doesn't feel as big. It may be more overwhelming with 2's because they are running around, but maybe if you go somewhere that has an open play, like Musikids, it will be better.
mine has 6 kids....honestly when all show up i feel overwhelmed too...usually everyone doesn't all show up
The moms club in vienna has 10 kids- way too much- start adding in siblings (if older or if they start having more kids) and it;s chaos. When it's so formal and set like this mom;s club i just drop out and pass. I can't handle hanving 9 kids, let's say 6 siblings and 9 parents along with us.. not worth it.. it gets better- when you go to preschool you kid will pick their friends and you'll have playdates- the playgroups are not important since at least here- most kids will be attending very different elementary schools.
We just went through this with our playgroup. We have 10, but rarely does everyone come and now that the weather is good, we usually just host outside and it is not a big deal. However, I do worry that in the winter if may be a problem - we, too, have a smallish house and if everyone came, it would be so crowded. Plus, a few usually bring babies, who are not mobile, but it does add to the crowd!
