Tell me about opening up your colonial downstairs

We're starting to talk to contractors about knocking down walls (putting up columns etc. where needed) to convert our boxy colonial first floor into an open floor plan (may or may not bump out the back a bit too). Please share your experience, thanks. Recommendations for contractors as well as cost figures appreciated as well, thanks.
