Can anyone recommend a good Winter Camp program that is metro accessible or easy to get to by bus from the AU area? For my 5yo dd. Our nanny doesn't drive, and I'm trying hard to find a program that fits the bill.
Thanks! |
| Am I the only one who doesn't know what Winter Camp is? |
| No, you are not the only one. |

The problem is finding winter break camp for 5 year olds. It is easier for 6+. This from the camps and classes board:

| Never heard of such a thing. VERY strange. |

Why do you have a nanny if she is not going to take care
of your child during the Winter break. I'm assuming that you are talking about time spent away from school. Don't you think that your child would like to spend some down time at her own house maybe playing with some of her friends from school? Or, heaven forbid, her own parent? |
| It's 2 weeks, can the kids just stay home and recharge? |
| Are there no working parents left on DCUM? Why such horror and recriminations at the thought of winter camps? And if you think it's a barrel of laughs to 'stay home and recharge' when the weather is miserable and there aren't a lot of friends in the neighborhood, try to spending the week in my house. I have a lot of flexibility and could swing a week at home, but last year with two extra weeks off (one right before Xmas break) due to snow, my kids were bouncing off the walls. This year I've already snagged a spot at Zoo camp and my son is so excited. OP, not sure about the bus routes but that might be one to consider - their programs start with kindergarten aged kids. |
| Just let your kid have some downtime at home and maybe plan a playdate or two. That's what I'd do if I had a nanny. |
| Why is winter camp such an oddity? Not everyone can take off 10 days at Xmas. In FFX County, SACC has winter camps. So does Chantilly Academy, Frozen Ropes, and lots of other programs like that. |
| winter break camp is certainly no oddity. OP - the Zoo is on the Red Line, so your nanny should be able to get to it easily. |
But OP said that she has a nanny. |
Maybe nanny's hours are 3-7. Maybe nanny has her own kids to take care of from 8-3. And there are plenty of us without nannies who are wondering what to do with our kids. My place of employment has pretty much canceled all vacation between Thanksgiving and January 5. DC coming to work with me isn't a great option for more than one day, much less two weeks. |

Is she in DCPS? A lot of schools offer camp through HoopEd or something similar.
Also try Theater Lab (in Penn Quarter) or the zoo, though the zoo fills up FAST and is only the 2nd week of DCPS break. |
| As previously mentioned, the National Zoo has two programs. The DC JCC has a program -- its about a 10 minute walk from the Dupont Circle metro at Q and 16th. I also think the YMCAs have programs. |
