I have read that some early signs of pregnancy can be cramping and headache. I am really hoping that I am not pregnant, but am a little worried becuase I did have unprotected sex last month ( I did post earlier about having unprotected sex the day before my last period started and know that it is highly unlikely). For the last week I have had a mild headache and now the last two days pretty bad cramping and I do feel hormonal. I feel like I have PMS and about to start but the symptoms are so similiar. Can anyone descibe to me what the cramping feels like in early stages of pregnancy?
I'm not nauseous, overly tired, etc. I am praying that this is my period! |
| I had horrible cramping -- like my period but more achey -- and I was pregnant. I would run out and get a pregnancy test so you can put your mind at east. |
But I haven't missed my period yet, so can I take one prior to that? Yikes |

I think pg tests are accurate 10 days post conception -- read the box, it should tell you. And some are more sensitive than others.

| Boobs! I had never in my life been so aware of my boobs as those early days. Not only did they hurt like a mofo, they were just so... there. |
OP here how far along were you? Here's the scenario: had unprotected sex three weeks ago, 2 days before my period (unlikely time to get prego), my cycles for the past few months have been 21 days vs. 28 days (not sure why, could be a result of having thyroid disease, perimenopause(44 years old) or other issues which I had an ultrasound for this past Friday), this weekend bad cramps for two days w/ headache (typical pms symptoms) and now boobs are tender (also typical pms). I have no idea if I am really late becuase my periods are either 21 - 28 days apart? I really don't have any other symptoms of pregnancy: I am not tired, no nausea, etc. I can say that I am obsessing and becoming a paranoid FREAK! I think the thing that is bothering me the most is I rarely get cramps and if I do, they aren't ever bad. This time they were bad and so was my headcahe. I'm thinking about taking a preg test but since I am not sure if I am really late, not sure that is the thing to do? Also, I expect the my ob will call tomorrow with results from my ultrsound and I assume that if I were to be prego, they would have picked it up on the ultrsound (transvaginal as well as external) I will admit I have never been preg and don't really belong on DC Urban Mom but who best to ask. vent to than a bunch of Mom's who have way more experience in this than I do. And reading this I am sure you all think I am a BIG FREAK! |
Me, too - exactly - for both children. |
| Me too here -boobs were the first symptom I had - probably not more than 2-3 weeks into it, if that. |

OP, it doesn't sound from that description that you are pregnant. Not impossible, just less likely than 10 years ago and/or in the middle of your cycle.
Also, believe it or not, a pregnancy can be seen on an ultrasound at two weeks. So if you had one last Friday and they didn't see anything, you probably are not. Nevertheless, a pregnancy test costs around $14 and will tell you for sure. Go to CVS, pee on the stick, and you will know. |
| If you had sex and then got your period two days later, how can you be pregnant? Is that even possible? |
I think that you can technically get pregnant even during your period. And OP is not on a regular cycle so ovulation can be tricky in tracking. |

FWIW I don't think you're pregnant either - but as PP's have said, why not just get the test? The First Response test you can buy anywhere is pretty accurate even before your next period is due. I also agree the U/S would have picked it up so it's really unlikely.
As for your symptoms, don't be fixated on the nausea not being present as for most of us that doesn't start from anywhere between 5 to 8 weeks into your pregnancy. I agree BOOBS are the first signs, for me all three times altho I did also have early cramping which every time I thought might just be my period about to start. Could your symptoms not all be attributed though to your being perimenopausal? The headaches/ cramping/ general odd feeling plus change in cycles? If not that then definitely your thyroid issues could be causing some if not all of these symptoms? Either way, good luck. Sounds like you don't want to be preggo so I will hope for you that you're not, but if you are then embrace it cos I am sure the Universe had a plan

| Op here - took the test this morning, it was negative! Let's hope it is right! |

Original boobs poster here... I was no more than three weeks from conception when the boobs caught my attention. They always get sore before my period, but this was something special. Much more sore than usual, and also sort of denser/ heavier and more sensitive all over.
Sounds like you worked it out, though. |
Hi boob poster! lol. My boobs are tender but not anything "special" - just sore. I also get sore boobs around my period but not always. Although I have to say that one is pretty sore. Not dense or heavy. For now, I am going to trust that test and try and relax....hopefully my period will start soon and I will then really be able to relax! Thanks for your input - very helpful! |
