circumcision techniques

I understand there are a number of different techniques that can be used to perform a circumcision. Anyone have any recommendations as to which is the best, ie the fastest, most reliable and least painful?

there are a few different ways to do a circ but it really just depends which way your OB was trained and is comfortable doing them.. I have really seen no difference between the methods, the circ outcome and proedure is much more dependant on the technical skill of the OB and if they use a local anesthetic.

There seems to be three main (differing) techniques that are used, the Plastibell, the Gomco clamp, and the Mogen clamp. Usually OB's or ped's use one type when they do hospital circumcisions, and Mohels (the Jewish person who performs circs) uses a different method when they perform a Bris. Why not ask your OB or your ped about the various types? You could also get the name of a Mohel from a Jewish Congregation, and call him to ask about how they do it.

Besides the different types of circumcison, there are also differing pain relief options. If you will be doing it at a hospital, it is very important that you get the highest pain relief possible for your son. This is called the dorsal nerve ring block -- it is a ring of injections around the penis that will make it go completely numb. This is different than the "anesthetic" that is typically applied on the surface of the skin, which does not provide adequate pain relief.

Apparently, there is also some choice in how much skin to remove. This is kind of an interesting article about it: http://halfclip.dyndns.info/style/base.html

My guess is that the doctor (or Mohel) who performs the circ has his/her own preferred style, type, and pain relief that they usually choose. If you have preferences with any of these things, then the thing to do would be to find a doctor who prefers that style! Good luck.
