| I have never been in a Wal-Mart but hear they are a freak show |
|
Good! That means more jobs you morons.
gotta hate corporate america so you can justify your crunchy lifestyles, right? |
| as they say in the place where I come from, hot damn. |
No, you just don't understand the big picture. Walmart has a history of wage and work hour violations, lower than average retail wages, and unaffordable health care. The impact on communities can be extremely negative: depressing wages and displacing better paying retail jobs by forcing smaller retail businesses to close. Walmart receives subsidies (your tax dollars), while they implore tax loopholes to avoid paying state taxes. In some communities, they have closed stores--moving to new locations where they receive better tax breaks--and have left huge, abandoned warehouses that are unlikely to be occupied by other businesses. Drive around middle America, and you'll see this over and over. |
| I don't buy the "more jobs" argument, but maybe the groceries at Wal-Mart will do something to reduce the problem of "food deserts" in the District? |

Have you seen the maps showing how few groceries stores (as in, Giant, Safeway etc - not a crappy corner store w/ mostly shelf stable items) there are in the East side of DC? The residents there clearly need more options for groceries and affordable shopping. Walmart might not be great for every community but I fail to see how it would be negative for the eastern portion of DC.
AND - I would LOVE to have a Walmart near me (the one that might go in on northern GA ave since I'm in SS)! As for wages - I have heard that actually they pay relatively well for retail jobs and that it's non-retail work that they're normally compared to. They also try to offer affordable health packages, which seems reasonable for low-skilled hourly workers even if they aren't stellar plans. |
| It would be interesting political serendipity if the Wells/Barry bill to establish a 5-year limit on welfare benefits passes in time to create a whole bunch of job seekers just as WalMart is opening and looking to hire. |
| I guess no Costco in DC? Was this a Fenty thing? |
| Costco is still slated to go into Fort Lincoln, which is located in Woodridge DC |
| After a couple of years after people realize that Walmart has raped and pillaged their beloved city, those jobs won't seem that great. Then they will up in arms about getting the evil Walmart out of there. That will be hard with four locations. They are in for the ride of their lives. |

It is my understanding that Walmart is not receiving a dime from the government. They did this on their own. As for lower wages, it has been reported that because these are the smaller Walmarts with an emphasis on grocery, most of the wages will be comparable to grocer salaries, i.e., Giant, Safeway, Shoppers.
The construction is projected to produce approximately 400 construction jobs. i doubt very many will go to DC residents, as most construction jobs in DC are staffed with non residents. Upon completion, it is estimated to bring in 1200 new hires. DC has a very high unemployment rate, and I hope in emphasis is placed on filling the positions with qualified DC residents. I don't know why Walmart decided to place two in Northwest and none in far southeast. Far southeast residents could and would utilize the Walmart before New Jersey northwest residents. |

13:19 just how will Walmart rape and pillage my beloved city. Just asking!!
Oh, and are you currently employed. Have you been consistently employed within the last three years. Do you know someone who has been unemployed for more than eighteen months in the last three years and their unemployment benefits have been exhausted. If you know of such a person, go to him/her and ask that person if they would accept a job from Walmart at approximately $14 -$16 an hour plus health insurance right now. |
| I'm not familiar with all the neighborhoods the Wal-mart is going into, but I think it is a good thing for DC. Not only will they bring more jobs, but it will provide cheap goods for people who don't have a lot of $$. Not everyone has the same incomes as the majority who read this board and it is easy being smug when you are one of the "haves". |

It seems that African Americans are happy that Walmart is coming. The only people opposed are smug, stuckup, white liberals who want to control the way people, eat, drink and think. I'm glad they're coming.
