Volunteer at Soup Kitchen for Thanksgiving?

Anonymous
Any suggestions of where adult and children volunteers may be welcome to serve or distribute food? Thanks.

Where are you? You can google soup kitchens in your area and call them about TG. I know Gaithersburg Community Soup Kitchen has a volunteer program for TG day.

Please don't limit your volunteering to Thanksgiving. It would be great if it was year around.

I tried to volunteer at a soup kitchen once for Thanksgiving. They told me they were full up with volunteers, but that I could help out there "the other 364 days a year." It was a wake up call to say the least.

It's terrific that you're interested in volunteering! Our family has voulnteered for years with Food and Friends, Martha's Kitchen, Iona Senior Center Meals on Wheels, and National Capital Area Food Bank. All of these are great organizations that need your help. However, I have to agree with the posters who've suggested that many organizations are inundated with offers to volunteer on T-Day, while they have to beg for help on many other days throughout the year -- August is particularly tough.

That said, I know that Food and Friends is looking for help next Tuesday when they'll be distributing pies purchased through their Slice of Life fundraiser. Note: this is not an acitivity where you'd be handing out food to F&F clients, but would still be a big help to an organization that does very important work. Pie distribution will take place at many locations throughout the metro area. And, even if those slots are filled or don't work for you, you can still purchase a delicious Thanksgiving pie to benefit Food & Friends. Go to www.foodandfriends.org.
