MCPS ES Rankings...

Is there a resource for ranking elementaries within MCPS? I thought I'd seen it once...

Do you mean Schools at a Glance out on the MCPS website? I think most people look at the AYP and FARMS rate and base their opinion of the school on those factors. Or just look at the cluster and decide on the elem based on the HS.

Greatschools.org uses the test scores and simplifies them to a 10-point scale, so it's useful for comparing schools roughly.

One complicating factor is that sometimes there are schools within schools. So there might be a language immersion program that performs well, within a larger school that performs poorly.

MCPS likes that set up. Just trying getting data on the non-immersion part of the school. I'm not convinced they even track it.

However, sometimes the immersion students perform worse on the standardized tests since they learn words and concepts in the other language and don't know the translation in English.

You can also have a fantastic school with lower scores do to socio-economic or language issues that has nothing to do with the teachers/environment etc. The reverse is also true..

Try www.schooldigger.com

It uses only test scores but ranks schools in a whole state

MCPS and PGPS data has shown that is true until 4th grade; from 4th grade on immersion sudents perform better than their peers across demographic groups. That is why PGPS has kept its immersion program in place in spite of budget cuts elsewhere.
