Anniversary Dinner Tosca vs Equinox

Anonymous
Has anyone gone to either of these restaurants recently? I can't decide between the two. We want to try something we have not been to before.

Thanks for any input.

I love Tosca. I was very disappointed with my entree at Equinox.

Tosca is great, especially if you call and tell them it is your aniversary. I like Equinox, but my husband thinks the portions are too small and feels like he is sitting in someone's sun porch.

I think Tosca has very good food, but the ambiance is so blah -- I always feel like I am in some hotel conference room. I like to go there pre-theater, but for a celebration I'd probably go to Equinox (even though I haven't been in a while).

i don't remember loving the ambiance at either. tosca feels business like.

Neither is particularly delicious.

Tosca definitely feels very businesslike, but I had two fantastic lunches there this summer.

They are both decent options for a business lunch. Why waste an anniversary dinner at either?

Neither for an anniversary. Agree with above that they are both more business-y than romance-y.

My suggestions -- if you like Tosca (i.e. relatively modern Italian) - Galileo III (just opened, but tried and true chef Roberto Donna), Bibiana (still a little corporate, but may be more intimate in the evening, or Teatro Goldoni.
If you like Equinox -- CityZen - hands down. Other venues to think about - 1789 (old school, but still good), Palena, or Komi.

Yeah, 1789 for romance for sure. Right on about the businesslike atmosphere of OP's choices. Great for romance: L'Auberge chez Francois, Potomack Farms, Cafe Divan

Thanks for the suggestions. We have been to City Zen. Loved it. 1789 was okay. Love L'Auberge. Been there quite a few times.

I will look at Galileo. Thanks.

1789 has a new chef in the past year - if the last time you went was some time ago, you might be pleasantly surprised to go again.

Corduroy might be another possibility. Komi (if you can get in) or Palena are also good suggestions.

Do NOT do Galileo - horrible (cheap and bland) space, poor service, inconsistent and mediocre food. I've eaten at Galileo II a number of times and I can't see Galileo III lasting a year. Would recommend Tosca 10x over - better space, nicer service, better and more interesting food.
