questions about job application

Anonymous
The job I'm applying for requires a 1-2 page writing sample. I wrote a very loose "script" for a presentation the head of my department gave recently - should I clean that up and submit? Most of my "writing" for my current job is emails (they do need to be well thought out and well crafted, but I wouldn't think of them as writing sample material) or memos (same deal). I've co-written many publications and briefs, but by the time they are in final form, usually a consultant and editor have refined them so I feel dishonest claiming them for my own. I do a ton of talking points, powerpoint slides, etc., but again, they don't easily translate into writing samples.

Other question: they need three references. Do I take a chance and list one of the heads of my department (who I trust, and work closely with, but is not my direct boss). The issue is that this job is a long shot and I don't think I'll get it, and then I've told her I'm clearly applying for it. What to do? I have two other folks I can think of in my company that I trust and work closely with so I will list them, but am uncomfortable listing the person in my department. I feel like it's soon to be giving them references...I thought that was usually after the interview stage. If my resume goes straight to the trash, I've taken a big risk for nothing. The other option is to give them the name of someone I used to work with in grad school, but that was five years ago (though we have kept in touch, published a paper together four years ago, and I am a guest lecturer in one of her classes every year).

Thoughts or advice? Thanks!

Eek! No one with advice???

I just talked to a good friend who said DO NOT put any of staff down from my specific department and to put "please contact me before contacting these references" - is that okay???

Yeah, I wouldn't list anyone at your current place of employment as a reference, even if you don't directly work with them. Can you say "References available upon request"? As for your writing sample, what industry do you work in?
