10-mo-old son won't eat it anymore. don't know whether it's nutritionally significant or just a good first solid. is there any reason to keep trying to give it to him?
I have a 9 month old and I don't feed him it any more - although I keep it on hand as an 'easy food' if he is not feeling well or refusing everything else. The range of solids he is on now + formula gives him all the nutrition he requires.
It's a good, easy source of iron. Not a problem for formula fed babies, but might be for bf or milk drinkers. Have you tried cream of wheat? My 13 month old gets some every few days since she now drinks regular milk and doesn't get a lot of solids with iron in it. You can also talk to your ped about supplements.
Try switching to another baby cereal, like oatmeal. Mix other foods with it too.
Our pedi stressed that cereal is very important up to at least a year, since it is the main source of iron. DD is eating meat but it ensures she gets enough. I will see what changes at her 1 year appt in a few weeks but we were told at the last appt that she needs to have the cereal 2x a day. I vary between rice, oatmeal and multigrain cereal, they all have the same iron content.
OP here... this is so helpful. I bought some multigrain cereal/oameal. I'll see if he likes that. though, I've noticed that he seems to be playing a game with me by spitting out food, not just the rice cereal. it actually is really cute, and I laugh. so, I think he's doing it partly to see my reaction (because he smiles as he's doing it). bad mommy!
If he likes yogurt, they sell YoBaby with cereal. Mine also is bored with the cereals now that he's tasted other food.
my son went through a spitting phase...cute at first but it gets old soon. i remember him spitting pureed squash all over my clothes at an airport once. don't laugh too much!
MY DD GOT TO A PHASE (10 MONTHS) THAT SHE WANTED TO ONLY SELF FEED.
Have you tried mixing anything with the cereal, like fruit? DD1 *loved* oatmeal mixed with plain yogurt.
