So, like many, we had to make our selections for next year's medical coverage. The provider for my employer has now generously changed its rules relating to flexible spending account claims for over-the-counter drugs as per the following: "Beginning January 1, 2011, Aetna will require a written prescription or statement of medical necessity in addition to an itemized receipt." Hmm, so now I have to make a doctor appointment, pay my copayment for that, all just to get an Rx or statement to accompany my FSA claim. All this for claiming OTC products. Ridiculous!! This is with Aetna PPO. Anyone else have this new requirement through their provider? Oh, and of course there are other changes (i.e., less coverage for particular thing).
(sorry, particular things)

This new law applies to everyone. This has nothing to do with the individual provider.

I believe that's a change mandated by the IRS, affecting all FSAs.
Ah, ok, thanks PPs. I should have been better informed.
NP here. It still sounds ridiculous.
Yes, thanks PP ... I stand by my comments, still (OP)
It's part of the new health insurance law. FSA's will also be capped at $2500 in 2013.
Why couldn't they separate health insurance from employment? That would have been the way to go.
Talk about health "care" ... Let's see if further restrictions are placed on FSA in the future (e.g., not permitting use of FSA for copayments).
