| What do you all do for a living? Just curious...I'm a single parent, with 2 children. I know the importance of saving money and want to have money for my children's education but it is virtually impossible to do so after a mortgage payment and childcare expenses. How do you do it?Any single parents? |
| Single mom of 1 PreKer here making 70K base/annually. Have about 3K saved. I put aside what I can when I can and don't worry. There wasn't any money saved for me either and I owe very little (under 5K) in SLs today at age 30. I did State schools. I will urge my child to think prudently when choosing colleges. My first choice school would've left me 70K in debt for undergrad. I could've gone to undergrad for free and a professor who really wanted me to go apply to alma mater for law school was working his network to finance it for me. There are opportunities to finance an education if one is resourceful. No worries. |

I should add that a good guidance HS counselor should have contacts at schools that offer good financial packages for students. Another tip that I found successful was to ask for more money at the end of the semester as sometimes the school had leftover aid money to spend. |
| 4 and 2 yo. About $60k each. |
| Another single mom here of an 8 yr old. I just finished paying off credit card debt (was underemployed for many yrs) and am now playing catch up on my own 403b. So I have zero saved for my DD's college. I am now saving for a down payment for a house. I wish I could afford to save for her and I plan on putting aside a little bit if I have it at the end of the month but right now, I earn $50K and I just don't have much extra. |
| 200k 7 and 10 years old. Not planning on contributing much anymore. We make in the low 200's. When the kids were younger we put a gob if money in college savings. Now we are concentrating on paying off the mortgage. With cashed stock options, mortgage will be in the low 40's. We max our IRA's and 401k's too. |
The best thing you can do for her is be self-sufficient later. You don't need to save for college, thats a bonus. |
| 3 year old. Have made the first three annual payments to MD prepaid fund. Will cover 4 year degree. I have no problem "locking him in" because md schools are great. If he wants to go elsewhere he will have to find the difference himself. I am not a checkbook. |
