Man - the opinions are strong here! I had my son cir'c and he had no ill effects. He is 7. |
I don't get it. How is he lucky? Yes I read the thread, but I still don't get it. If my OB said this to me, I would be totally freaked out. What a weird-DOH! |
Why'd you do it? |
What was your OB talking about? |
One word - GROUPIES! |
Wow, grossly inappropriate. |
Do you know how creepy this sounds? I'm also curious as to how reading this thread has made you understand where he's coming from. I think there's some very strong evidence on this thread to back up the fact that circumcision is needless and cruel. |
NO! it's such a primitive act -- reminds me of terrible mutilations in Africa. We are too civilized a society for such things! it's HORRIBLE and should be outlawed. |
I think (hope) this is a farce, poking fun at those who say their pediatricians or OB's really supported the decision not to circ. I think someone a few pages back said their OB said "lucky boy" about the circ decision. So this person is either trying to be funny or throw that one right back. Very weird. The cut-happy folks have nothing left to say. |
Those who are against circling, just be honest- there's never going to be an answer from a circ'er that will satisfy you. even people who do it for religious reasons will be questioned by you.
|
Anti-circ person here. And I agree with you. I really will never be satisfied with any excuse to circ a child. However, I understand that the religious tradition of circumcision is strong, and I can understand why people circumcise for religious reasons... even if I don't agree with it. But those who claim to do it for medical reasons are misinformed or choose to be misinformed. Anybody who actually researches this procedure (and I'm not talking about reading an article or two, I'm talking about looking into the history of it and reading all the studies) will come to the conclusion that it is an inhumane and unnecessary procedure. |
I find the argument that a medically necessary circumcision in adulthood is very painful absolutely ridiculus. You might as well cut out tonsils, adenoids, appendix and anything else at birth since I am sure it will be "perceived" as "much more painful" when done at an age when one can communicate about pain.
My OB (a Reiter Hill OB) was against circumcision and really happy that we initially decided against it. 3 weeks into my kid's NICU stay he developed a UTI and the docs kept mentioning circumcision as a way to prevent future UTIs. So we went ahead with it, got a call a few hours after that our child had to be given a blood transfusion because he lost 1/3 of his blood. The urologists were outraged, pointed fingers, but in the end nobody wanted to fully explain what went wrong. Needless to say, if we have another son, he will not be circumcised. It's a personal decision and by all means if you want it done, please go ahead. But the arguments of possible future complications, looking just like daddy or other boys, or any other arguments are subjective and by no means medically relevant. |
If your religion promotes mutilating a baby, then there is something wrong with your religion |
I'm really sorry you went through this. Some of our doctors are so completely misinformed about the normal penis; it is a disgrace. What happened to you and your son is horrible and should not be happening in what is one of the world's leaders in medicine. Ugh. UTI's run rampant in NICUs - because the babies are so small, there are so many sick babies, babies are getting catheterized (SO easy to get an infection because of this), many nurses try to retract the foreskin to clean it (BIG NO-NO!!!), and many babies are not receiving full breastmilk (a protective factor for UTIs). The point is, many babies get UTIs in the NICU. I wonder what they recommend chopping off of baby girls who get them? |
Another anti-circ person and I agree. I believe that any intelligent person, if they really are honest, look at all the available information, and are strong enough to set aside their cultural bias; will come to the conclusion that circumcision is unnecessary and damaging. I also believe that it should be made illegal to circumcise any newborn baby in our hospitals, and I fully support those places in our country and worldwide that are working to outlaw it. However, I also understand the power of religious tradition and I do support religious freedom, so I am comfortable with allowing Orthodox Jews the right to proceed with their out-of-hospital ceremonies. |
