I really just can't imagine most juniors and seniors choosing to live with a roommate for 4 years and an all access meal plan instead of a kitchen. Singles are still basically unavailable to anyone who doesn't have accomodations. At least for my child and their friends, a nicer dorm still doesn't make up for privacy and independence.

I lived on campus at W&M for all four years. Roommates and most comprehensive meal plan all the way through. It was fantastic!

Same for me, and my son will also be on campus all 4 years. Can't beat being close to everything and not needing a car to access campus. He has the cheapest meal plan and cooks in the kitchen for some meals.

It's more expensive for a worse experience. One year of living in a nice dorm + the all access meal plan is $14437.

Almost nowhere off campus would be more expensive even when you add in grocery costs.

I don't think there's any real competition. Some people don't want the additional responsibilities associated with living off campus. But otherwise who's going to pay more for less?

If you think it would be a worse experience then certainly off campus appeals. But some think the on campus experience is superior. There are options for everyone.

Not having to worry about summer sublets if you don't want to stay around in the summer, not worrying about leaving earlier to find a parking spot for class, not having to make time for cooking if you don't want to, being able to get back to your room quickly between classes. I see lots of on campus benefits. It's not always about what is cheapest.

Half of these are just the results of poor planning. Find a place with a 10 month lease, live within walking distance or take the bus (saves you $500 on a parking pass anyways), meal prep, etc. College is the right time to learn these life skills unless your kid is going to live at home indefinitely after graduation.

Good luck with the 10 month lease. Few and far between.

I mean objectively you're paying more for a smaller space, no privacy, and less freedom. If the argument is that landlords need to be more competitive, I just don't think that makes any sense. You either want that or you don't - there's likely very few students that are indifferent about one over the other.

Every single one of DS's friends had no problem securing one. Midtown, Lawson, Sterling Manor, New Town, GOH, all offer that option.

New Town is hardly within walking distance. How many of those are?

I didn't say they were all within walking distance. The majority are however, and again the bus is free to students. Arrives at Blow Hall at the beginning of a class change and departs from WAWA right after

Midtown is really the only one that is possible. 10 month lease within a few minutes walk of campus is a bit more tricky.

Midtown just said they only offer an 11 month lease now, so that doesn't even work.

Governor's really isn't any further from campus than Midtown, and Lawson is an extra 5 mins past Midtown. If an apartment is less than a 1.25 mile walk from Sunken your kid definitely does not need to be driving to campus.

Eh..when you are a student who has to be on campus until 10pm, being able to hop back to your dorm in minutes vs finding a bus or walking over a mile to get home? There are places for everyone. Some people love being on campus and it makes more sense for what they need.
