Sucks to be from a state school right about now, since you asked.

He’s got something good lined up, but says there are two camps - those who went to boarding school, who all have jobs, and those who didn’t, where there’s much less success. Read into that what you will.. btw, he’s a public school kid

Definitely true. The prep school kids survive on relationships.

the question this raises is maybe it’s better to spend the big bucks on boarding school - as those alumni REALLY will help kids who reach out - as opposed to even the best of the best with regards to alumni loyalty - Williams or Lehigh - where it’s pot luck whether or not you’ll get help. Send ur kid to Deerfield or Andover and then UMD lol

Nah. It’s boarding school then Colgate.
Set for life.

AI has a long way to go before CS majors get replaced. It’s a tough job market now but last year was worse. And it’s nothing compared to 2008.

Some kids are good at school but not good at resume writing or interviewing. Up to a year of no job offer is normal, but beyond that it’s time to look at other things that might be going on.

Have others found this to be true?

well this is why there are aggressive diversity programs to recruit URMs (despite the vitriol on DCUM claiming that URMs get no benefit in the job application process other than some focus on HBCUs). Boarding school kids - typically white and from privilege- have connections which open doors - like it or not. Always has been the case, always will be the case. So the only way to even the playing field is to tilt the process back with URM recruiting, and god help the white kid with no connections, you better have grit and know how to hustle -

All DC’s friends at T10 have jobs or are going to grad/prof school , mix of public and private, no boarding school kids. Jobs were through campus recruitment or internships prior summer

^usnewsT10 university not LAC. Known to be a MBB feeder but only one is going that route

I presume he is not from an ivy engineering program or MIT or CMU or truly top public(Berkeley, mich)? The engineers from ivies are all hired or going for top grad schools, or launching startups with university “prize” innovation money

I have worked at one of the big tech companies for the last decade. There are always peaks and valleys when it comes to hiring. Right now we are in a valley. There was a lot of over hiring 3-4 years ago. My company, while not letting people go, has limited hiring through the end of FY. Sometimes one just has to wait things out until the market improves.
