This was true this year. Though take Vanderbilt off unless eD1. Add Rice/CMU. |
Wow. Congrats!! Emory is great. ED1? |
Private school 3.6 poster in another thread, might be interested in this kid who got into Emory ED from private. |

Keep telling yourself that. The kids I know in public have landed at just as competitive schools as those in private. In many cases, well beyond. It's not what it used to be, but I understand that's a hard pill to swallow if you've paid private tuition for many years. I don't really understand the meaning of your post. What is the "hARD PILL TO SWALLOW"? |
I don't really understand the meaning of your post. What is the "hARD PILL TO SWALLOW"? You again. You are so painful. I can find 6+ posts where you do this weird capitalize thing. Your kids aren’t even in the college process anymore. Move on former public school mom - do you even have kids applying again?!? Sorry but this isn’t for you. |
| Bump for private school poster. |
+100000 and with 3.8 to boot |

Fascinating discussion in this Reddit with an AMA with a T10 AO - short excerpt below:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ApplyingToCollege/s/UAB1tFcBAq “Does going to a highly-competitive school: Exeter, Andover, Lawrenceville, Horace Mann, Dalton, etc. worsen your chances at a T10 because potentially lower class-rank and lower GPA? … No. The school you goes to REALLY has a major effect on you getting in to top schools. If you go to a feeder, your chances go up pretty significantly as long as you're not getting straight Cs or flunking … Interesting. I was told that at elite schools, your chances are worse because you are competing with other kids in your class for spots. The students at the top high schools are much more impressive, and it is harder to maintain straight-A's. I'm a Lawrenceville student. Will having a 3.8 UW GPA harm me when applying to T10s? …. I mean, going to a feeder school doesn't mean it's a ticket to slack off. Still work your ass off while there, but also know that the acceptance rates at feeder schools like Andover are really, really high. And re: GPAs, we care about transcripts. Grades and rigor are things we look at, so I can't say for certain if you just give me a GPA …. That seems inherently unfair to me... having the privilege to attend a feeder increases your chances significantly?” |
Life isn't fair. And having had kids at one of these private schools and public school I can say that the private school one worked about 4 times harder in high school. It was trial by fire. |

my kid is at a major feeder.
there are certain teachers who, if they agree to write a LOR, can get you into HYP. if you're the head of the student government or one of a couple major student groups, you can write your ticket. they send maybe 35% of the class to T20 schools. many kid pick a full ride over a T20 school and aren't in that 35%. major glade deflation so a 3.85 doesn't disqualify you from anything. but my kid also slept 14 hours over 5 days during finals. |
My kid is at a similar school. One of his/her LOR previously taught at HYP for a decade+ and is known to have pull. It's both a blessing and a curse to get this instructor--it's a ridiculously hard class with everyone scrambling for the 1 or 2 As. |
Non-DMV Private here. Agree 💯 esp about student group leadership and role/connection to HYPMS 45%+ of class admitted to T20 70% of class going to T35 Agree on 3.85 too. There’s a lot of stress though. |
agree |
This a really helpful AMA |
