No, it means that a poor Black student checks two boxes and one is most important because it’s visible. A poor White student only checks one box and that one isn’t all that important because it doesn’t show as well in the viewbook. You are assuming socioeconomic diversity matters to schools and families. It doesn’t. |
I personally know two families in this situation. The school is happy that they're fulfilling their DEI quotas, and the families are satisfied they've gamed the system. I used to donate to the school's fundraisers, I don't anymore. The fundraisers this year have had very low participation. I'm sure other families are seeing this and refuse to contribute. |
I wonder if we are at the same school. I know of families that don’t get necessarily a full ride but do get “discounts” even though their housing, vacations, cars and overall disposable income are far greater than mine. I know one family who was able to negotiate with our and others schools for the best deal. |
How do you know they're on full FA? |
Directly from the parents. |
Wow! All my parent friends (black) are barely getting any and are definitely not in the cars/homes you mention. I wonder how they do that? |
If you were correct, no schools would ever give financial aid. |
Well, one of them bragged calling their FA a “full sports scholarship”. We all know better, an all-girls middle school does not give out any sports scholarship. I’ve even asked the admissions director if they give sports scholarships, and was confirmed that there is no such thing at the school in any of the divisions. |
Current Holton parent here, also from the Deep South but not white. I hope your family chooses to stay at Holton. We are staying and trying to work with the administration to make sure that our concerns are heard and that our girls feel that there is a space for them at the school. |
There is no "organic nature of diversity" in a country where we have systemized race into our law and social structures. |
Says you. If you want to live in the past so be it. I’m moving forward and not carrying baggage. I guess I’m privileged…but don’t minimize my minority experience…I don’t prescribe to your beliefs and I am free to not choose them. You will be happier if you look for unity and progress. |
Sorry just to go back to this - is fundraising to support financial aid now considered “woke” DEI or am I misunderstanding? How can that possibly be a bad thing? And I feel like there can be threads and threads of people criticizing DEI but no one ever gives specific examples of what exactly this school or others have done that are so bad. Just a general commitment to DEI is bad, or it infuses everything etc etc…. And I’m sorry OP got flamed for describing why they cared. I have had a similar background and totally understand. |
| People are just obsessed with vilifying DEI. The work done by authentic DEI programs is incredibly important, even if they make you uncomfortable. |
| There should be a ban on DEI posts. Parents aren't ready to have a conversation about White privilege. And given the people here are the most privileged of them all, nothing good is coming from these. It's just a bunch of rich White folks complaining about integration. |
White folk? Nice labeling. Not it’s not just white folks complaining. All sorts of races don’t appreciate the labels….but that is DEIs end game. Divide. Divide . Divide |
