Why is this even relevant?

OP is Asian and someone assumed along the way on this thread they would prefer schools with more Asian kids. I don’t think OP ever said it was that important to them.

OP here. 40% or 20% Asian does not matter too much to us. As long as the community is relatively diversified(both socioeconomic status and culture), we will be comfortable about it.

We’re an Asian family who relocated to this area 6 years ago (from NC) and my oldest went to Woodson/Frost MS. It was a good school and no complaints about the schools. But I didn’t like the weird boundaries - so friends/classmates could be very far away. We rented and were on one far end of the boundary and to get to the other end could take 30+ minutes. Hated having to drive through Fairfax city which has a lot of lights and traffic.

We recently moved just a few miles away into Oakton pyramid (navy ES Franklin MS) and love living in this area. Excited about younger kids attending newly renovated Oakton. It is strange though that we are much closer to Chantilly HS but zoned for Oakton. But that’s how many schools are — The townhouses literally right across the street from Woodson HS are zoned for Fairfax HS.

It’s kind of odd to complain about Woodson’s boundaries as weird but then move into the Navy ES area that’s so far away from Oakton. But it just shows how people adjust.

Getting to/from Woodson HS by car took 25 min from where we were by Wegmans and had to travel through Fairfax city. (literally across the street from us was Fairfax HS boundary) although we are closer to Chantilly HS getting to Oakton HS (which by miles is farther than my old home was to Woodson HS) won’t take nearly as long as it took us to get to Woodson.

because they are in Fairfax City which requires that all students who are residents go to Fairfax. FCPS has no control over that.

I would really recommend Franklin Glen. It's a smaller, tight-knit neighborhood. Has a pool and a summer swim team. The zoned high school is Chantilly. The elementary schools are Lees Corner and Oak Hill.

I understand what PP is saying. Traffic in the Fairfax City area is really annoying. It’s just very congested in that whole Fairfax City/Merrifeld/Annandale area. I work near there and live where PP lives. It’s much easier to get around in the evenings and on weekends. That really matters when your kids are school aged.

I thought all of Franklin Glen went to Lees Corner? Either way I agree that’s a nice community. Chantilly Highlands seems nice too. Oak Hill ES is right in that neighborhood. For both FG and CH you’d be close to the zoned ES, MS, and HS.

I don't live in Franklin Glen, but I think the AAP center is Oak Hill.

I agree. Franklin Glen is a nice option.

Here is an option that is in the crossfield/Carson/Oakton pyramid.

It is.

But Lees Corner has LLIV.

We have four kids so we can not afford private school at all. I know Langley is a great school but the area is considered "too" wealthy to our family so we will not feel comfortable especially given our tight budget we can spend on the house. We never want to stretch our budget into a more wealthy area. T

Good idea, but you knew that.

I would advise you to simply avoid the overcrowded schools and you will be fine.

What OP really needs to do is see what type of properties within his price range are available on a real estate site like Redfin or Zillow. If he's asking about Oakton, Madison and McLean, he's already got some idea of the demographics and/or school ratings.

Agree that budget will likely be the deciding factor here. But wanted to point out that Woodson and Chantilly have higher percentages of Asians than these three schools. Marshall has more than Madison but less than Oakton and McLean.

This is one reason why the board should really consider how many people actually act.
Everyone on this thread sees it as entirely normal and acceptable, even good in 2023 America to help someone pick a school with race as a major factor.
