Looking for a high school with amazing boys basketball coaching and academics

Sidwell
Bullis
Landon
SSSAS
SAES
Prep
Potomac

Yes, I think any of those IAC teams would have finished 2nd in the MAC this year.

Earlier somebody said the MAC has been better than the IAC for several years now. That's just demonstrably false, in my opinion. I think Sidwell would have barely beaten SSSAS last year - but it would have been close. Prior to last season, there wasn't a team in the MAC that could hang with SSSAS since 2018.

This is a fun discussion. I like debating folks with good knowledge of our awesome local hoops scene.

??? Maret beat your #3 ranked team, Landon (by 10 points AT Landon).As did Potomac. There is only one team other than Sidwell that can go above SAES and that’s Bullis. Def not SSSA. I’m sure there were injuries or the like at that game but def a fluke.

I’ll try again.
Disclosure I don’t have a kid on any of these team, we just follow them.

1. Sidwell
2. SAES tied with Bullis
3. Maret tied with SSSA and GPrep
4. Landon but lots of potential
5. Potomac

I gotta say, I’m most impressed with Sidwell and Maret (again no bias towards MAC). Considering they have like 40-60 boys per grade and don’t bring in upper class transfers, it’s quite a feat. From what I understand, both teams’ starter have largely been at each school since at least middle school. I think that’s great. Nothing against transfers but it’s good to see that organic talent can show up. A testament to the coaching IMO.

Bullis is a bit too shaky. They have a lot of movement from year to year. They have an amazing rising 9th grader (NFL son) that has promise but I just heard he’s transferring to PVI.

Maret and Sidwell have talented young groups (9th/10th), if they can keep the kids from transferring, they will continue to do well.

Landon coach is great and I don’t think he’ll leave any time soon since he has young kids at the school so that’s always good.

Maret played SJC today in the DC quarter finals. Tied game back and forth, Maret even had lead close to halftime. SJC came in 2nd half and took strong lead and won by 20-22? Maret only has 1.5 kids tat really play come off the bench. I can imagine how much better they’d be with even 3 good contributors on the bench.

Not a great night for ISL hoops. SSSAS lost by 44 to PVI (game wasn't that close). Landon lost by 30 to Shabach Christian Academy. Bullis fell 54-61 to #9 seed Mt. Zion Baptist.

Over in the MAC, SAES beat #3 Riverdale in MD tourney & faces Landon-killer Shabach next.

In DC tourney, Maret fell to#1 St. John's and Sidwell beat Roosevelt, setting up game vs. Gonzaga.

Think you mean IAC? ISL is the girls conference. Landon plays in IAC.

OP wasn’t asking for the best. Asked for fantastic coaching and academics where they could give up AAU grind. The answer is you can’t give up AAU grind. Full stop. Second answer is what’s more important, winning team, a coach that will develop you, a coach that will get your recruited, or academics. Depending on how you weight and rank those questions, the answer will vary.

I wouldn’t put SJC academics ahead is Sidwell. Also, sadly, the coaching at SJC is unknown due to the current coach’s unfortunate health. But it doesn’t matter, there is not one school listed on anyone’s rankings that you can play on as a contributor and not play AAU.

Maybe the answer to what OP is seeking is GDS and STA if you just want coaching and good academics.

Can someone with more knowledge explain Shabach to me? Did they just add an upper school? Everything I can find only shows a k-8 but I'm watching video of their team so they must have an upper school, right?

We played them early in the season. It's basically a megachurch out in the middle of nowhere in MD. They only have basketball teams.

If they played in WCAC they'd finish mid to lower end of the conference.

Yes because most parents of star athletes want their kids to go to actual schools. Not sure this is the flex you thought it was.

SSSAS had a great boys basketball program but their coach left and now coaches DeMatha and hence this year has been hard for the SSSAS team.

Coach Jones is great, he is greatly missed.
