Dry January 2023 Thread

I did notice my face looked better today. I also woke up feeling better. That led me to get up and walk the dog, which energized me to come back and make a list, exercise, change the sheets. I might have done those last 2 anyway but not as early in the day.

I don't know, it's like I felt less avoidant today.

I had a dry dinner party Friday night. We started earlier and ended earlier, but all in all it was fun. One friend is not doing Dry January, but he abstained to support the rest of us. I think it's worth doing once a year. My teenagers loved all the adults being sober interestingly--they said it was a really fun night.

I’m also using the month to try to lose the weight that has crept up over the last year and a half. I’m substituting seltzer and tea and have eliminated the nighttime snacking I’d find myself eating while drinking wine. A little experiment to see where I’ll be at the end of the month without those extra 700-1000 calories per day. I’m keeping my daytime eating and daily exercise habits the same.

Craving my sunday night red wine with dinner, a fire and show. I've made it this far through the weekend to give up now. Stay strong!

Also hoping this helps me make a dent in the five pounds that I've been unsuccessfully trying to lose for a year now. Has anyone who has done Dry January in the past found that some weight came off?

+1. I have read (well, audiobook) both and there are things I liked about each. This Naked Mind really didn't hit me on the same level as Quit Like a Woman.

I have COVID and a drink is about the last thing on my mind - I am at day 110 total!


I have been binging quit like a woman on audio the past 2 days. Omg I may have just found my source of all sober motivation.


PP here. Right? This Naked Mind has some great background physiological knowledge, but Quit Like a Woman will make you MAD.

I'm 51 and in a different stage of life as her and some of that stuff I am just not into, but damn, some of that resonated so, so much.

This is my 3rd or 4th dry January and I find Sunday evenings to be the worst.gritting my teeth to make it through tonight with disregulated and crabby kids.

Same. Sunday evening is my favorite time to have a drink.

I'm having a mocktail of this as we speak. We bought about 15 different kombuchas at WF to try and this is my favorite so far. It looks very pretty in a wineglass.

I ate two candy bars tonight. (I really wanted a drink.) peanut butter cups and twix. A sugar high, but better than a drink. And I’ll feel good in the morning.

I made a pasta dish for dinner. Made it though the prep and dinner wine free. Feels like a win.
