Swarthmore/Wes VS Williams/Bowdoin

This is outdated information. The school got through it and it was an important learning experience for both students and the administration.

Swathmore kids are known for being super intense. Like enjoying studying and Friday’s in the library types. Studying a lot and enjoy it.
Bowdoin is the “new” Williams - viewed as the “best” SLAC for the privileged. Kids are generally well rounded and sheltered but have some fun. Not as intensely self pressures as Swat. Williams is pretty much like that too.
Wes is a little bigger and many more quirky students. More are into science than many of the other high tier SLACs.

Outdated how? This happened last school year. For the sin of wanting to attend class or participate in club activities, students were threatened, harassed and called racists by their peers. And the school's administration did not do anything to stop it.

Ok, Ivanka.

Odd response. The strike and the intimidation of students by other students was well reported, you can look it up. But feel free to try to offer some alternative facts if you want to deny reality, Kellyanne.

I mean the point is, yeah, it happened. And, ultimately, it was dealt with. Luck of the draw that it happened there. Every one of these SLACs have the kind of students and administrations where something like that could easily occur. It's really odd that you're so focused on this one event at this one SLAC. Odd to the point of sounding obsessed and silly.

And, to be clear, I have zero -- and I mean zero -- connection to Haverford. I'm the poster who sent a kid to Grinnell, where I have no doubt the very same thing could also happen there someday, if it hasn't already.

No one thinks Bowdoin is the best lac. Williams and amherst win out cross admits almost every time

Your reading comprehension is lacking. This poster was slamming Bowdoin as being the new mecca for the privileged. She's not claiming it's actually the "best."

My mother is an intense scholar, my father was a laid-back intellectual. She loved it, he hated it. I'm more similar to him, and he talked me out of even applying. He was right.

Our Swarthmore guide was VERY intense. When one of the parents asked what the kids do to relax (on school breaks), he responded "Swatties don't relax."

Really turned me and my DC off, but that might appeal to some super driven kids.

We had a great tour guide at Swarthmore. He was very involved in many things but did not come off as intense at all. We didn't leave with that perception of the school. Need to keep this thread in mind if DC decides to keep this one on the list!

It does, but the geography and logistics mean that it's little used. There is a shuttle (and train into Philly) and the occasional student from Swat takes the occasional course at the other schools. But Bryn Mawr and Haveford have a much closer relationship than the other members of the consortium.

We toured Haverford this fall and the tour guide talked a lot about the consortium. Even mentioned that they go to Bryn Mawr just to eat dinner sometimes. Seems like those two schools have a close relationship.

We also had our Haverford guide discuss consortium. Much easier between Haverford and Bryn Mawr than over to Swarthmore or Penn. And also big talk on good food over at BM.

I'm the one who posted above about my parents. Just to be clear, their experience was quite a while ago, but friends who've gone there have said the same. But those friends, and my Mom, all loved it. If you're the right fit for that environment, it's a wonderful place.

Bowdoin is NOT the new best SLAC for the privileged. Bowdoin is known for having a more sheltered student body by far than Williams/Swarthmore and other SLAC's. It is an indisputable fact.

Disagree. This entire discussion thread has emphasized that there are in fact distinctions among these SLACs. And an underlying campus climate is not one event. Rather, the climate can lead to events such as that which occurred at Haverford, where a group of students essentially hijacked the school and shut it down for an extended period of time.

The differences that have been being discussed here are more about the intensity of the academic experience than anything else. Point me to one SLAC -- one -- where there isn't an "underlying campus climate" of institutional racism. You can't, because no school is immune from what's going on in our larger society.

I've read the utterly tone deaf email that Haverford administrators sent to students urging them not to dare venture downtown to participate in protests against police brutality against black men. If I were AA, I'd want to shut my school down and make people listen too.
