Stopped taking BCP, but no period yet..?

Anonymous
Haven't yet had unprotected sex, so don't think I'm pregnant (took a test to be sure and it was negative), but its been at least a month I think...I really should have written the date down of my BCP period. Does it typically take a while to start getting periods on my own?

For some, yes.

You should start your cycles normally. Try to think back to when you might have had your last period and if it gets to be 40+ days from that time, you might want to go to your gyn and ask them about PCOS.

It took six months after going off BCPs before I had a regular period. I think especially if you've been on them for a while, it's normal to take a few months to get your body back to normal. Granted I think six months was too long (an eternity to me) but search the archives here, there are lots of postings about the delay.

my cycles were off for about 3 months after stopping the BCP.

Just a reminder - you have probably tried for years not to get pregnant. For many it is not just snapping your fingers to change it around. If you are planning on TTC, I would recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertiliy so you can start getting a really good understanding of all the lingo and the process. It is a book that is recommended again and again on this site for people TTC. You can also start charting. Even though your cycle right now is irregular, it will get you into the routine.

Thanks PPs- appreciate the info!

I was on BC for 10 years before going off to TTC. Took 8 months to get a "real" cycle. My cycle's always been long, though (40 days) so maybe give it more time than that before going to doc.

P.S. I have PCOS-appearing ovaries, so if I'd starting freaking out too soon, I would have assumed I had PCOS (which it turns out, I don't). So give it some time. It'll be hard, but it's sometimes all you can do!
