What does a resource teacher do?

My son's ES had 1 or 2 resource teachers on staff. What do resource teachers do?

They are the elementary school version of department chairs.

OP again. His 1st grade teacher is the grade level chair or coordinator but there are also these 1 or 2 resource teachers. Do they teach and if so, in what capacity?

In my school, the resource teachers were more like subject department chairs -- i.e. there was a science resource teacher, a social studies resource teacher and so on. They went to the subject conferences and were a resource to all teachers in their field. Different from a 2nd grade team leader.

In our school the resource teachers work with kids who need extra help...kids that don't quite warrent the attention of the special ed teacher but still get pulled out for "resource time" in a smaller group setting.

As with PP, our resource teachers work with kids who need extra help. One of my kids got extra help in reading from a resource teacher. Another got some pull out services because he wasn't thriving in the larger classroom environment so he got small group or individual instruction. The resource teacher also monitored his behavior program.

public or private? What district, if public?

I think the term "resource teacher" can mean either something like an instructional coah for teachers (specialist in a subject area) OR a learning specialist for the kids.

in fcps, there can be a Mentor Resource teacher for new teachers, or instructional Technology Resource teacher, who helps the staff and kids with computers. Also a Gifted/Talented Resource teacher who pulls kids out of class for small group lessons and confers with teachers for class lessons.

In MCPS Resource Teachers in elementary schools are special education teachers. "Resource" can be a term that is used to describe students who receive less than 15 hours of special education services a week.

The resource teacher at our NW DCPS help students who need extra help, support teachers in teaching curriculum in specific subject matter and on occasion teach in classes. They can also be the spec ed teacher.
