Due to DD's allergies, we're saying goodbye to the annual purchase of a real tree. I'm sad because shopping for a tree brought me many good childhood memories, but I'll do anything to keep the allergens away from DD who's getting worse every year.
So, who's sells the most "real" looking trees? TIA! |
| Farm out your kid for the holidays, I mean it is Christmas for Pete's sake. |
Seriously, why do people like you bother. A typical a**hole on DCUM. |
| We got an artificial tree last year (half-off) at Merrifield Garden Center in Fair Oaks (Fairfax). I got a great deal on it. It looks mostly real. The more "real" looking ones were half off but the price was still $250+. So I'd guess you'd be looking at $500 now for a 6ft. one. They were very realistic though. |
| Be careful - a lot of artificial ones have lead... |

Anyone else have more info on the lead / artificial tree link? I always hear that but we get live trees so I don't necessarily look.
OP, if you want a nice alternative to the live / fake indoor tree, you could consider buying a live tree from a nursery (you can order big ones if you do it in advance). Keep it in its pot outside and put it in your back yard (or front yard if you live in the kind of community where your tree wouldn't be stolen or stripped down) and decorate it there. You don't have to even use real "ornaments" but can use things like pinecones, etc. For the past two years we have been buying live trees, bringing them in for 2-3 days around Christmas (any longer and they start to wilt) and then planting them outside the next spring. I find that a bit less wasteful than just buying a tree and scrapping it every year, though I do think DC recycles theirs, which is nice. |
17:10 here- we got one from Home Expo a few years ago- I knew it had lead b/c it had a tag on it that said "May contain lead" and have since heard that these contain it. We got rid of ours and are now going to go the natural route... |

We do artificial too because we sometimes travel and like to leave the tree up for a longer time. Plus I like a full, shapely tree and too many real ones are full of gaps.
The key is to look for the number of tips on the tree which should be listed. We got one many years ago at of all places KMart. I use a Yankee Candle plug in and always have folks asking where we got our "real" tree. Don't let the purists get you down! Artificial is wonderful too.

| Don't know if it has a lead issue, but we got a GE one at KMart a few years ago, pre-lit, for about $150 on sale. We really think it looks great and pretty real. We were real tree people for years, but I would get upset when I would see hundreds of unsold trees in the lots on Christmas, so we switched to fake. |
C'mon, it's a joke! Lighten up already. |

Artificial Xmas trees make me think of the song Fake Plastic Trees.
I have an allergy to the real ones, too. I have no idea why my parents insisted on getting a real tree year after year. We all broke out in horrible rashes for days after decorating it. WTF were they thinking? We found a decent one at KMart on sale. It looks pretty good. The ones that look like actual trees are expensive, but cheaper than real trees if used for a few years. If you want to buy online, Amazon reviews or other review sites can be very helpful. |

Try Balsamhill.com . We just ordered the Norway Spruce (on sale). The 7.5' one has over 6700 tips. Use the coupon code Joy2010 for an additional 10% off.
We had a beautiful tree for 7 years from christmaslightsetc.com, and consider this one an upgrade. |
| Costco has decent-looking artificial trees. |
| Oddly enough QVC |
What do you do if you visit someone who has a real tree, ask them to take it down? Put up a picture of a tree and then buy one at 1/2 price on Dec. 26. |
